Ranked as one of the top global providers of cocoa, Brazil is actually the original source of cocoa beans, which were discovered about 2,000 years ago in the rainforests. Early in its history, Brazilian chocolate was actually consumed as a frothy drink made with fermented, roasted and pulverized cacao paste combined with cornmeal, chilies and other ingredients. Sugar was unknown to the ancient Aztecs and Mayans.

  • Today, Latin foods include cacao in many different concoctions, including:
  • Treats - Brigadieros, for example, are commonly found at birthday parties and other celebrations; these popular truffles or bonbons are made with condensed milk, cocoa, butter and lots of love.
  • Entrees - Pork with Chocolate and Chile is a fantastic combination of chiles, dark chocolate, pork and vegetables; it's a savory/sweet dish reminiscent of Aztec culture. Brazilian pizza, chicken mole and other wonderful dishes include this food of the gods.
  • Beverages - Hot chocolate comes to mind right away, but other beverages made with chocolate abound. See our inventory of drink mixes here.
